FAQ
What are some example sources of inspiration? Choosing a photograph that is important to you is the best start to being 'inspired' by a photograph, but finding an 'important' photo is not essential. It might bring back memories of an event that the photograph tried to capture. A photo of a loved one might trigger something that happened or simply emotions toward the person. A photo of you when you were younger might bring back memories of the good old days. The possibilities are limitless and this is what the "A Picture's Worth" project is trying to capture.
What if I can't write 1000 words? First, it is not necessary to write 1000 words (at least 300 words is fine). It is recommended that you choose a photograph that is of significant personal importance. Having found one, you'll be sure to find difficulty fitting everything within 1000 words! If you're still having trouble, try answering a few questions that a reader would ask in addition to what you have already written.
What if I don't think my photograph is good enough? Although a picture has the advantage of being worth more than a thousand words, this project believes that it is the essay that makes the photograph! The emphasis is more on good story writing that can bring out the real significance of a photograph.
How can I improve my chances of being published? Having said that there is a real emphasis on the story writing, there generally needs to be a positive element in the essay whether it is in the story itself or the quality of the writing. Hence, a negative article that has not been thought out (i.e. pointless or offensive article) is unlikely to be selected for publication. However, if it is clearly apparent that negative elements derive from the photograph, it is likely to be selected.
