This photo was taken on the 30th September 2003. It was my first time with a camera and I think it worked perfectly. It was a rather mild day and we were instructed to go outside and take pictures of each other. There were many complaints such as ‘I’m not photogenic!’ and ‘oh but I don’t want my photo taken!’ But in the end everyone was persuaded and we all went outside.

I was sharing with Venetia and Stacy, (Venetia is on the left, Stacey, the right) and we were allowed to take 7 photos each, with a few left over. I went first and this was the first one I took. Searching for inspiration, I saw the tables people ate lunch at when it was sunny. So, being the photographer, I ordered my two partners to stand on the table. The sun was in my eyes so I told Venetia to look at the camera and Stacey to look away – perfect model pose. They did it perfectly too, without smiling.

A few weeks later we got to develop them. I chose this one as it was my first ever one. As I was developing it, I saw the sunlight appear, and I thought to myself how lucky I was on that day. I’d never even taken a proper photograph before and then these sunrays appeared. I was so pleased with myself.

When I came out of the darkroom I dried the photo and all of my classmates were amazed as well. I had to make several copies and Venetia and Stacey were especially pleased. They thanked me for capturing that day so well, and after looking back at their photos as well as mine, I figured that it was a cool day to take photographs. It was really fun because we could just take photos of each other mucking around, being ourselves. Even though Venetia and Stacey aren’t model like at all, it still depicted the day well, especially with the clouds in the background.

I’m sure this is just the start of my photographic career, but I am certain that the photos I took that day will remind me of where I started from, and how inexperienced I am. Photography is one of my favourite subjects because I think it gives me a chance to capture the moment and express myself. Which is all I want to do.
