Every little girl remembers the very moment when they were first allowed to try make-up. The glee, when her mother or grandmother let her look at all the reds and pinks in different jars and tubes. The blushes, the brushes, and all the other colors and choices found in a woman’s make-up bag. The moment when she first picks up the tube of lipstick of her choice, usually the reddest and prettiest one she could find.

This daughter, ZZ, was no different. She had watched with excitement for what seemed hours as her grandmother promised her a chance to put her own make-up on. Her grandma tried to explain to this sweet little girl that less is more. ZZ nodded and listened, all the time watching the tubes that sat lined up for her. She waited and waited quietly for her chance.

Finally, her grandmother stepped aside allowing her free access to the treasure on the countertop. ZZ picked up a tube of pearly pink, then caramel brown, before deciding on the deepest red she could find. She looked over she looked in the mirror at her grandmother for approval. Then, just to be safe; she looked towards her mother.

After she assured herself that she was safe to start this wonderful experience, she touched the lipstick to her lips. The sheer pleasure shined through her eyes as she generously applied the lipstick. She checked to see if she’d applied it correctly. As she had watched her grandmother do; ZZ picked up a tissue and gently bloated it to her lips.

Then she turned with a smile bigger and brighter than any her grandmother or mother had witnessed before she said…

“Look Momma," she smiled, "I'm beautiful." And without a doubt, she was the most beautiful woman in the room.
