Pinching a lighthouse

All around you, you could feel a sense of excitement on Bus #2 that morning. The whole eight-grade class was to go on a three-day trip of Raleigh, the Outer Banks, and Wilmington in North Carolina March 10 - 13 of 2004. We were given a booklet to fill out while we were there at the different sites and answer questions that the speakers were telling us. But, I don’t think anyone got all of them. So, you see all these kids looking at one another asking the other if they got what the answer to number two or something. It didn’t matter much, I’d just do it on the ride on home.
You could see tiredness on every kid’s face that morning, not too many kids my age have a 5 AM wake up call. On the second day of our trip we were scheduled to see Cape Hatteras, The Wright Brothers Memorial, and Jockey’s Ridge, not to mention a fancy dinner afterwards. The tide was abnormally high when we left the Western Sizzlin’ breakfast buffet that morning and water was pouring in the streets. So all of us were forced to watch “Freak Friday.” But, Lindsay Lohan kept me watching, for some reason.
It’s colder than you think at the Outer Banks, so most of us had our jackets, hoodies, and beanies on while we departed the bus for the lighthouse. The sky was blue and my hands were almost that color as well. I believe I was the only one who was laying on his back taking pictures of Cape Hatteras, since I thought I wouldn’t get a chance to go back, plus the sky was beautiful too. Finally, I got all the shots I could, brushed my back off and headed back for the bus. Until, something in me had to take just one more of the lighthouse. I was quite a distance away, so I put my fingers on the top and bottom and snapped a photo. I like photographs that mess with your head and “warp” your sense of reality. This, I think, is a fine example of it. Plus, it looks like I’m squishing it.
