I was walking through S. Marco square looking S. Giorgio island (on the background) when I noted a gondola coming on the scene.
I wasn't able to see the island very well because of fog but I noted I was able to see the boat clearly. When the boat was in the centre of the scene I had the impression the time stopped.
I think the two lovers on the boat had the same impression. Two lovers held in a fond embrace, a foggy scenario and water all around. Close together. This could be the sense of eternity, I suppose.
The late evening light spread a pink gradations all around, it’s the light I prefer over all. It’s the sign that the venetian night is coming and is time to go home and have a tea. An hot green tea, at sunset.
I took this photo some seasons ago. I took it with my favourite camera, the bi-optical Rolleiflex. This camera is unique. It is about 35 years old but it works perfectly. I can not describe how beautiful is to use this camera. I can only invite you to try. A fantastic design, an exceptional mechanical quality, a superb optical definition and a 6x6 film format. Moreover all the camera is covered by leather. I just want to mention something about the light meter. It is constructed using a line of selenium diodes. They’re capable to read the light and give you and indication of the exposition values without using batteries. 1970, can you imagine it? The thing I prefer is the picture format. This machine, which use the 120 film, has a square format. I think it is the most elegant format you can use. I think it’s possible to appreciate it particularly in this foto.
When I took this photo I was with a special person. This photo is dedicated to her. To the things we made together, and to the things we cannot do anymore.
