I love flowering plants in a yard, even what most consider weeds. As my master gardener sister says, there are no weeds, only “indigenous” plants. We don’t own our home, but we are looking at being here for many years as renters, so I finally, after 2 years, decided to plant my own favorites among leftovers from past tenants. I have a lace cap hydrangea, and some sort of funky azalea bush, and roses leftover. A lilac I planted which bloomed this year, met a sudden death to its blooms, when my well meaning husband accidentally cut off all the lovely sweet smells with the weed whacker.

Thankfully, it will regenerate next year and I look forward to those aromas I love. After bringing home hundreds of canna lily seeds from our friends who weathered us from Hurricane Isabel, we have 3 healthy plants which I moved outside in May. No blooms yet there, but I discovered this morning, that the Gladiolas I planted on Easter are preparing to bloom. Not all of them, but enough to excite me. I have always liked glads, they grow tall and bloom one on top of each other. They are used to cover ugly spots on houses, and one of the reasons I planted them where I did, was to cover up the ugly phone box.

My next aim is to plant a Mimosa tree somewhere, another flowering plant I love, which reminds me of Dr. Suess ! Another Suess-like plant in my yard, is Henbit, which grows small, but in the shape of a natural topiary, rather odd looking little bloomer, which everyone here hates, but I like them, they BLOOM! I’ve also got a Calla lily growing, which blooms (sort of); its bloom is not a true one, but rather colorful leaves. And some pink bloom producing variety of clover/shamrocks, I’ve never bothered to find out which, I would rather just not know, and enjoy the color. Next time you’re ready to mow all your weeds down, lay down in the grass and look at them, and enjoy those tiny little blooms!
