White on white, or the clarity of blue ice hanging from the eves of the house: I don't know why I like winter. I have a house full of drafts, and I hate going out in the cold. I don't own a pair of boots, and finding my hat and gloves is always a matter of choice. They usually turn up in the spring.

But I love winter snow. It's one of those contradictions a person has trouble reconciling... love the snow, hate the cold. Although as long as I can stay in the house and watch the weather through the windows, it doesn't seem all that horrible.

Although there is something to be said for wrapping up in your best coat, hat and gloves and going out to stand with the icy wind at your face... and far better, to come back into the warm house and settle in for a cup of cocoa and watch the weather from the window instead.

Whenever the first hint of a winter storm arises, I begin checking the different weather sites on the Internet, carefully watching the edge of white (or the pink of an ice line -- not quite as welcome!) as it inches along some path that no one can control.

Perhaps there's something child-like in loving winter weather. It brings back to hope of snow days -- those rare days when it snowed enough to close down school. Playing in the yard, building snowmen and snow forts -- a shame I don't do anything like that any more.

Or, perhaps, it's just the wonderful magic of nature that draws me to like snowy, winter days. One might go to bed on a dull, brown world and wake up with a blanket of bright, white snow. The world has changed, and the dull cold winter swept away with something at least pretty to look at, making the cold more bearable.

So, if you have winter days, may they be warm and safe in the house, with a nice window to look out, and lots of cocoa.

    Hi,

I love the way I had to look twice to figure out the image. It adds to the mystery and creates a new way to see the beauty of winter. And your essay did capture that feeling of sitting cozy inside and watching winter crisply capture us.

    thanks for posting,
