Rained out days aren't always a waste

Climbing is somthing that has been with me since I was a child. My parent's would tell me of stories where I could create monstrosities to climb to unlock the chain lock on the top of the door to unlock it. Carefully balanced items, one on top of another would give me my path up.

Time have changed since. Since my first time to Devil's Tower, that climbing instinct was reignited. This particular picture was taken on my 4th pilgramage to Devil's Tower (I make a yearly journey out there, though I'm trying to make it semi-annually <grin>).

This was taken after a day of rest. I had been climbing long and hard the few days before. I took a rest day, and this day, I was planning to climb hard again...

Imagine my disapointment when it was cold, ugly, dreary and raining. Regardless, Devil's Tower is a magical place, and even just hanging out around the area is just fantastic.

There were several of us staying at the bed and breakfast I was it. Each a fairly new face to each other, each with there own stories and reasons for their visits. All from different walks of lives.

It was such a great day, just talking, hearing each others climbing experiences. A couple that was there had no intentions of climbing, and had really never even though about trying. Several insperational stories from myself and the others had at least piqued their interest.

Our host, the owner of the bed and breakfast, and chief climbing guide at the lodge managed to talk them into giving it a go. Mind you, that's a different picture worth it's own thousand words.

Just as the evening was approaching, the rain let up just for that little bit. We all move out to the sundeck, where we all saw it. One rainbow forming just beside the tower..

I ran for my camera, this time I had brought it (if you read my previous, about where I forgot it my first time) and pulled it off the charger and ran back to the deck.

After snapping a couple pictures, things just didn't seem right, untill I saw the second rainbow begining to form. I took the stairs off the deck to the grassy area below, and at that very point, the sun poked it's head out a little more.

My last picture I posted here, I though was one in a thousand, this one, I feel is one in a million.

Even the days that are rained out, somehow in this magical place, never ever seem to be that bad.

How could I ever consider this rained out day a waste?

I tell you, there is magic in that 'dem there Tower.

I think the picture says it all.

  • Even now after a year or so after it was taken, this picture still grabs me. It gives me that rush of excitement and magic that I felt when I took it.

I was not able to make it to the tower this year :( Changing careers from 15+ years worth of information technology back to returning to school full time has made a dent (a disappointing one) into my climbing time. But I am finding, without the IT career, I am far less stressed and burnt out. I am enjoying the new learning that I am doing now that I am going for my Psychology degree.

Even still, Devils Tower always was, and will continue to be magical to me. I long for the day to come when I can just take a weekend (or a MONTH! ) and just hang out at the tower.

The magic holds me just as tight as it did the first time saw it in a movie.. No, I think even tighter.

    Cheers,

    Greg
