Appreciating Life

Any time you get to see babies of any kind is truly an awe-inspiring moment because you get to witness the miracle of life. I am blessed and fortunate to work in a natural marine facility. Just a few weeks ago one of our dolphins gave birth to a beautiful calf. She is seen here on the right with her 9 year old daughter assisting with the calf.
To see this miracle unfold in nature is even more amazing. Since dolphins are mammals, they must breathe air, which is especially critical after birth. It dawned on me how taxing it must be for dolphin mothers to do their job. It would be the equivalent of giving birth to a running two-year old. There is no rest, no quick nap, and no break. It is their job 24/7 to make sure the calf is free from danger and nursing and swimming and breathing.
Dolphins are also not voluntary breathers. They must consciously decide to breathe, so that, in and of itself, is remarkable. The elements these young dolphins face are far more hostile than for most species. The nursing period for dolphins last for about two years, so it is a long process to raise their young. I was touched to see how graceful this baby swam being steered by her mother and her big sister. This photo reminds me of how fragile life is and yet how beautiful nature is in design, creation and evolution. Without this miracle of life, there is nothing. All of the cycles of life are designed to facilitate creation.
Sometimes when life gets so busy and rushed, we all need a reminder of the miracle of life, whether it is nature, people, animals, or even the fascination of watching a sunrise or sunset. To appreciate life is to truly live. Thankfully, the camera helps too!
