Cinco de Mayo celebrations came and went year after year for me. I'd never really taken any interest in hitting the bars or heading out to do anything special to celebrate Mexico's defeat of the French back in 1862. Most of the time, I would spend the time doing something with my kids, away from the hubbub.
This year was different. A spur of the moment decision took me to Old Town in San Diego. Music of all sorts filled the air. Dancers whirled and twirled. The aroma of a hundred different types of food wafted all around.
I saw a good many people who were having fun and even a few who weren't. I decided to pay more attention to those who were enjoying themselves because I tend to be drawn to those types naturally.
I took a lot of photos. Of people. Of things. Details that caught my eye. One of my favorite photos was that of a rack of crowns of paper flowers. I'd seen little girls wearing these wreaths on their heads as I walked around. Later, I noticed that plenty of women were wearing them, too. There was something about the bright colors that made these wreaths irresistable. When I snapped this photo, I could just imagine my daughter at my side, begging for one. Of course, she wasn't and she's at that age where she wouldn't be caught dead wearing a crown...still, I could imagine her when she was younger, pleading with me for a wreath of her own.
