I have been in love with the game of baseball for as long as I can remember. My grandfather would take my brother and I to Three Rivers Stadium, sit in the outfield bleachers and watch our heroes play on the field of dreams in front of us. My grandfather would tell us both of games in Forbes Field, of seeing his heroes play the game he so dearly loved...Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Bob Gibson, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson and Willie Mays to name a few. These giants of the game conjured up dreams of my own, playing in late October, bottom of the ninth, game tied and me stepping up to the plate in the 7th game of the World Series.
Mostly, my grandfather would tell us about all the grand ballparks of his era. As he traveled consistently as a young man he made a point to attend a ballgame in each major city that had a team and a bleacher seat available.
This moment a few months past at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, PA, conjured up those memories I still have of how grand it is to attend a baseball game, how beautiful the ballparks of yesterday and today really are...the rainbow came into view just as the Pirates took the field against the Cleveland Indians. The memories were golden in my mind as they were for my grandfather. What my mind's eye saw will last for a thousand more ballgames.
The beauty of baseball, of the city I call home and the sport I cannot live without...baseball was easily summed up in this single image. A golden moment in my memories of yesterday and today.
I consider this image the finest image I have ever taken while attending a baseball game. It's dedicated to my Grandfather.
