Oily Waters

I shot this photo last week near the river in Antwerp. It’s a small part of a large graffitti. It’s a reminder of the oilspills that occured after the shipping accidents which happened last summer here in Belgium. Fact is, one of the ships still lies near the coast. I remember the images on the TV, birds totally smeared with oil, many of them died..., another ship that ran onto the wreckage of another..., searoutes on the North Sea have been altered to avoid further accidents..., not to mention the effect on tourism. Our wildlife is still recovering from that tragedy and I wonder how long it’s gonna last before the scales are in balance again. The dog on the photograph almost made me cry. It’s so desolate, so hopeless...
I'm hoping to go back to the sea soon, to play in the water, to be a part of a healthy ecosystem. I'm not very aquatic but I believe that there's still undiscovered territory for beneath the surface, and instead of shooting missiles to mars or fight wars, let's go down there and discover.
