The Salton Sea is an expiring lock of water situated close to Palm Springs, California. The lake was formed by a natural disaster caused from overflow of the Colorado River in 1905. It was said to be the next Palm Springs desert resort, only with water. Promises of sound investments in property if one purchased close to the lake was considered a sure thing.
One spring afternoon my boyfriend and I decided to drive to the Salton Sea, which is roughly a 2 hour drive from San Diego. His deceased mother had purchased property during the 1950’s. Her purchase in the property proved to be a sour experience and a poor investment due to the lack of interest in the area. What exists now is a small community of people who reside in the area of the Salton Basin.
I brought my digital camera along to document the event. He had the property easement measurements, along with a map of the actual property which denoted street intersections with street names. We did find the actual property, which is amazing considering there were a handful of home that had been built (and that is generous in description).
The photo I have submitted for your review is the actual intersection of his mother’s property. As you can see there is nothing but the phone lines which run parallel to the highway. You can’t make out the markers but they are there like fine skeletons highlighting the way to the unknown. This photo has become a favorite for me. It’s rich beyond belief, textured like the land itself and the sky deep and forever, much like the dreams of a future next to the lake called the Salton Sea.
