I lived in London for a year and a half, several years ago now. Despite having grown up in Sydney, accumulating far more years of life there than anywhere in the UK, I still feel ‘homesick’ when I come across photos of London. Perhaps it is the lifestyle, which was radically different to that to which I had been accustomed, which I miss.

This photo was taken when I stopped in London for a few days in 2002 to visit friends, before completing my journey to Edinburgh. The view is from near the front of the Tate Modern Gallery, looking across the Thames at the familiar dome of St Pauls Cathedral and the somewhat more modern buildings to either side. The number of cranes which appear on the skyline are testament to the continual rebuilding of the area.

The bridge itself was constructed as one of many Millenium projects, and is now far more stable to walk across than I was expecting following the early complaints of movement. I felt like jumping up and down in a few places just to make sure, but resisted the temptation.

When I first decided to relocate from Sydney to Edinburgh – a move founded more in the phrase ‘why not’ than ‘why’ – I bought a digital camera (a Nikon Coolpix 5700) for the journey. I suspected that this would encourage me to take photographs that I would never bother taking if forced to weigh up the cost of film, developing and processing; but which I’m glad I took. Many of these photographs – this one included – are ones that I am more than happy to have now.

I’ve since sold the Nikon, replacing it with a Canon EOS10D, but I’m more than happy to have had it lead me into the world of digital photography.
