At a very early age I became interested in power as in electricity.........Our neighbor worked for the telephone company and every year the batteries had to be replaced in all the telephones.I inherited boxes of batteries with which to amuse myself. They afforded us with lights for our playhouse in the back yard and a buzzer at the door........The little motors built from pieces of tin cans wound with fine wire surprised the skeptics.......But the most exciting use of battery power was the sound of music from a radio station on a little two tube radio built from a kit....
The house in which we lived had electric lights and a wonderful radio giving us hours of entertainment, but as I remember, there were not many other appliances The power for these amenities was produced by an electric company with two huge engines that thumped away twenty four hours a day. As the years went by homes gathered more and more electrical gadgets......soon consumption of power became so heavy that the utility company became obsolete and electrical energy had to be acquired elsewhere..
Great dams were built utilizing water power to turn turbines producing electricity to meet the needs of large cities......Adding more generators produced enough power for the rest of the towns and farm communities......Homes became filled with electrical applianced without which our lives would be quite different..... Soon the country was crisscrossed with towers and lines to carry the life blood of our modern world......When the sun disappears below the horizon ,the lights come on and we become nocturnal creatures........thanks to the mystery of electrical power..........
