I went on a trip with a friend who was exploring New Mexico as a place to possibly move to. I was along for the adventure but I myself wouldn't think of moving to the southwest because I grew up by the ocean and New Mexico is way too far from the waves for my liking. I have never lived more than 30 miles from the west coast in my entire life.
On one of our side trips we stopped to visit White Sands National Monument, where I found the perfect photo reflecting the irony of the notion of moving away from the western shores of the United States. There on the hilly dunes some people had set up beach umbrellas and were having a picnic as if they were at the ocean. I walked up behind them and got this great shot. The whole scene looks like people having an afternoon lunch on the beach, but the ocean is 1000 miles away!
