Connection to the past

There she is, to some a big waste of money, an out used and past it prime, big ole hunk of concrete and steel. To others a historic landmark, an old piece of history, worth every dime to keep it preserved.
But to me it’s a great link to my own past. A wonderful reminder of simpler times, times in my teens, when I crossed her a many a day on my way to an adult life. Times when while I set, waiting for the car on the other side to cross, I thought of girlfriends, and bond fires, and high school football games. Times when we respected and feared authority, and authority earned those feelings. Times long gone but still cherished.
This bridge connected us, brought us together, enabled us to communicate. Yet, when lifted in the center, would allow great ships to pass as they say “in the night”. What memories she holds, what stories she could tell. What secrets she possess. What lessons did we learn, and what lessons are still to come?
Rare is she now, but how new she was to us then. May we never relinquish our connection, hold tight to the dreams we had then, and turn them into the reality we have lived today. Hold fast and true, never sever that connection, it’s what keeps us all sane, and never let's us forget the memories of our youth.
